DNS?

Well folks... I'm afraid my very first race may end up as a DNS (Did Not Start).  I cannot even begin to tell you how disappointed I am in myself. Last year I had signed up for a Full Marathon in AZ in the middle of February. I had ample time to train, so I had no excuses, right?  Wrong... It seemed it was one thing after another. First my hip, which most of you have heard me complain about before, had been giving me quite a bit of grief and that interfered with training. I finally had came to the decision that it may be best to do just a Half Marathon instead and changed my registration. That was a heartbreaking day. But I decided to just make the most of it, there would be plenty of time for marathons in the future once my hip problem gets figured out.

My bad-ass self ready to run!

At the end of January I had a minor medical procedure done. It was supposed to be an easy procedure with a super quick recovery. But there were some complications and a couple day recovery turned into a couple week recovery. I've tried running twice since the procedure and each time my body revolts. It wants nothing to do with it. I've been able to lift weights, bike and use my kettlebells without much pain, but running is another story.

I'm still holding out some hope that in the next few days I can run more than 2 miles without my body feeling like it's shutting down, but in all reality I've started to accept that it's not going to happen. I still have my other marathon in November that I'm already registered for and this summer I'm joining a local group to run the Spartan Beast in Utah. And hopefully the rest of my recovery will fly by and I can register for another half or full this summer! Keep your fingers crossed for me!!

How do you get over feeling like a quitter?

Have you ever not done a race you were registered for??

Bummer! Take care of your body, that's the most important thing. There will always be more races.

Look pretty good in the picture to me. I've been injured many times and you have to LISTEN to your body. I know it's depressing and you feel like slug when you don't get some form of exercise in, but if you push too hard, it will just take longer to get better. I've had a few DNSs in my years. One race I even drove to the start with bronchitis, having an inner battle - yes I can, no you can't, yes I can, no you can't - over doing the 13 miler. I ended up picking up my packet and going home. Take it easy and you'll be back on the trails sooner! Happy miles!

You are not a quitter, there is a medical issue, talk with the race organizers and maybe they will delay your entry a year. I hurt my knee 2 weeks before a very important Marathon and was really bummed, but running is a lifetime thing and you will have opportunities to race in the future. It does suck, but it would suck worse if you really injured something - like the others have said listen to your body.

I agree with Harold... gotta take care of yourself, as hard as it is, there will be more races to run! But I hear you--that's definitely discouraging. :(

Lose the word 'quitter' and put in 'smart person who listens to her body.' Let your body heal. Patience is key :) Wishing you the best with all of this.

It is tough! I am in a similar boat. Signed up for the Eugene Marathon and it was suppose to be the "one"! But Planter Fasciitis has sidelined me and I will not be able to to do it. So bummed. Just hang in there!! Stay POSITIVE!

i agree with XLMIC it is much smarter to be listening to your body and running another day. I know it is a bummer all the same but you will be back and badder than ever!
