Cupcake Marathon and Ankles...

Just a little note to let you all know (in case you didn't notice already) I changed my blog name to match my Twitter name. Seemed more Cohesive :)

Onto the Cupcake Marathon!!!!

Before anyone starts yelling at me, this picture was a joke, lol! I really did not eat that many cupcakes! I actually only indulged in 1 mini cupcake *cue applause!*

Sadly I did not finish the Cupcake Marathon, despite my best efforts.  The day before the Cupcake Marathon started my kids, some friends and I went bouldering.  Sometime, either during the hike or falling while bouldering, I landed on my ankle wrong.  Didn't notice at the time, and didn't notice it until I went for my run the next night.  It started hurting, so I only got 1 mile(3/14) in.  Decided to rest it for a day and the next day I tried again, just 1 more mile(3/16) before I couldn't do anymore.  At that time I decided to RICE my ankle. Gave it 2 days rest, iced, elevated the whole sha-bang. It felt a little better and I still didn't think it was anything serious since the only time it hurt was when I ran.  I went for a run again and got a whole 3.1 miles(3/19) in!  Albeit slow, I still did it!  Kept up the ice, elevation routine. Felt better so I hiked 2 miles (no proof though for Cupcake Marathon) and went bouldering Sunday.

Week 2 already seemed to be going better, and then to make it even better, I got 4.64 miles(3/21) in on Monday!  First time I ever ran that long on the treadmill. Gave my ankle another rest day and Wednesday was gorgeous so I had to get outside. Got 3.07 mile run(3/23) and picked my kids up from the sitter and we all walked the .34 miles home together.

The next day I tried to run on the treadmill, still had quite a few miles to finish for the cupcake marathon. Right away the ankle was funky... I decided to walk since I needed the mileage.  Had to walk at a 5% incline, cause it hurt if the incline was any higher or lower than that. Strange...

Gave it one more rest day... At this point I started feeling like I wasn't going to finish. My first "race" and I couldn't even finish? Felt pretty embarrassed of myself. I decided I was going to finish one way or another even if I had to walk the rest of the miles!  Put in a movie the next night (Super Troopers!) and hopped on the treadmill.

Took the first 4 miles slowly... Was feeling pretty good.

hehe, I love Super Troopers!

The last 2 miles didn't feel the greatest :(

As I hobbled upstairs from the gym I decided I was done... Sat down and iced and elevated the ankle. I decided I didn't want to hurt my ankle any worse than it already was and it should probably be rested for longer than a day or 2 at a time. I hate feeling like a "quitter" but I guess it's better to quit from an injury rather than laziness. How's that for looking at the glass half full, lol?!?! My total Mileage came to 19.2 miles (21.2 if you count the undocumented hike). All in all I'm pretty happy, I wanted to increase my weekly mileage and I definitely was successful at that!

A big thank you to Jason at Cook Train Eat Race for putting this together! So much fun!!! I'd definitely love to do this again :)

Races...

I knew this day would come... The day when I began thinking about races.  I had already eyed up "fun runs" before I even began running.  Warrior Dash? Mud and Beer? Can you really go wrong with that?  I have talked to a friend about meeting up for Warrior Dash in CO, but with both of our schedules (ok, fine... our kids schedules) it's still up in the air, we haven't registered yet.  Closer to home there is another fun run, the Dirty Dash, that I'm hoping to do with another friend, however we still haven't registered.

Yesterday my friend Heather (from Run Faster Mommy) had posted something about the Really Big Free Marathon.  I don't know what came over me, within minutes I was signed up for a FULL MARATHON!!  What on Earth did I get myself into?!?!  I mean, right now I'm doing the Cupcake Marathon, but that's 26.2 miles over the course of 2 weeks... Not 1 day!  It's not until 2012 so I suppose I probably should stop hyperventilating and start thinking about training.  Any words of wisdom from experienced Marathoner's?

Will I be seeing anyone else in Las Vegas in 2012??

Cupcake Marathon - Halfway Done!

Cupcake Marathon 2011

Are you in???

So in an effort to increase my mileage (and who am I kidding... for CUPCAKES!) I signed up for the Cupcake Marathon.  Concept is simple, we were given a choice of Half Marathon (13.1 miles) or Full Marathon (26.2 miles) that had to be run or walked over the course of 2 weeks. Simple enough, right?

CookTrainEatRace has done an amazing job of putting this together!  He has found amazing sponsors and put together some amazing prizes.  Kudos to him.

So over the last week I have logged 11.74 miles out of my chosen 26.2 miles.  I somehow ended up with a ankle injury(?) last week from bouldering, landed on it wrong when I took a fall.  Nothing srious, just enough to put a damper on running.  So I rested up and now need to log 14.46 more miles!  Wish me luck :)

March 14 ~ 1 mile

March 16 ~ 1 mile

March 19 ~ 3.1 miles

Ice and Rest after the 5K
March 21 ~ 4.64 miles

...Dreaming of Cupcakes...

So that's where I'm at! How far are you? Finished already? Full or Half? What was your average pace?

Oh and on a related note! Miles, Muscles and Mommyhood is hosting a Cupcake Celebration Giveaway!  Check it out and congratulate her for finishing the full 26.2 miles plus some!

My Little Yogi

It has been so long since my last post! I feel like I have half a dozen things I want to post about... However, I'll spare you all and only post once a day :)

My 3 year old (just turned 3 on 3/13!) has been loving her Yoga Kids dvd. She does it practically everyday, and she is good! I've never seen her sit still that long or pay attention for that long for anything else... EVER. Needless to say, I was impressed.

I should also probably warn you that this post is a tad bit pic heavy! I'm a proud mama, what else can I say...

Everytime my kids do something like this it just confirms that I'm raising them right. It erases any parenting self-doubt and I know my kids are going to grow up to be happy, healthy, active adults.

Do your children work out with you?

Bouldering... I'll take what I can get!!

I finally got out climbing! It was my daughters 3rd birthday on Sunday, we had just had a party for her the night before so there was nothing special on the agenda for her actual birthday. It turned out to be an amazingly beautiful day, like in the 60's (t-shirt weather!); so the kids and I decided to head out for a hike and some bouldering with some friends. We packed up our bags and headed up to 26th St. boulderfield in Ogden.

We started out on the Tooth boulder in the lower boulder field, I tried a couple of the V1's (I think?) and had a heck of a time, after not climbing for so long my fingers were so sensitive and they were in pain right from the start. The Birthday Girl even gave it a try too!

After getting warmed up on some easier problems we headed up into the upper boulder field to (I believe) the Around the World boulder.  We climbed atop the boulder and got some yoga in as well.

I worked on this V1(?) and a couple others until I was pumped and my fingertips were on the verge of bleeding. Around the same time we all decided we were done and it was time to pack up and hike down. The kids had a blast too. I love that I have such outdoorsey little monkeys!

And on another note... Cupcake Marathon started yesterday!!! Did you register??

That's it... I NEED rock!!!!

As in granite, limestone, sandstone, quartzite, anything! It's been so long (probably a good 6 months!) since I've climbed (pulling plastic doesn't count...), I'm going through withdrawals. I took my kids on a hike today up in the mountains and my 5 yr old (who is a boulderer through and through) climbed everything he could.

We weren't really planning on climbing today (if it wasn't obvious by the tennis shoes in the picture, lol), but it was a pleasant rest during our hike. So here's to hoping the weather stays nice and I can get my rock fix soon!!

I love my kids :)

I love using my kids as workout devices, lol... Though they might enjoy it more. Today Instead of using weights, or my own bodyweight, I used my children. My 5 yr old is a scrawny 39 lbs, and my 2 yr old is 26 lbs. I used my 5 yr old for bench presses, overhead shoulder presses and leg presses. My 2 yr was a bit more skiddish so she only let me use her for skull crushers and bicep curls. But it was a blast, and taking pictures was by far the hardest part!

I think my lil Guy got a pretty good core workout too while trying to hold himself still as a board for me :) I love family friendly workouts! And the weatherman is predicting a high of 39° this afternoon so I think dragging the kids out for a walk would be acceptable.

How do you include your kids into your workouts?
