Races...

I knew this day would come... The day when I began thinking about races.  I had already eyed up "fun runs" before I even began running.  Warrior Dash? Mud and Beer? Can you really go wrong with that?  I have talked to a friend about meeting up for Warrior Dash in CO, but with both of our schedules (ok, fine... our kids schedules) it's still up in the air, we haven't registered yet.  Closer to home there is another fun run, the Dirty Dash, that I'm hoping to do with another friend, however we still haven't registered.

Yesterday my friend Heather (from Run Faster Mommy) had posted something about the Really Big Free Marathon.  I don't know what came over me, within minutes I was signed up for a FULL MARATHON!!  What on Earth did I get myself into?!?!  I mean, right now I'm doing the Cupcake Marathon, but that's 26.2 miles over the course of 2 weeks... Not 1 day!  It's not until 2012 so I suppose I probably should stop hyperventilating and start thinking about training.  Any words of wisdom from experienced Marathoner's?

Will I be seeing anyone else in Las Vegas in 2012??

For the LV Marathon, you don't have to finish, just start. :) I think you still get the beer at the finish.

I did Warrior Dash in LA and it was a blast! Quite possibly the most fun I have ever had in the mud! Make sure you wear shoes that you never want to see again because they will be toast!

As for a marathon, I recommend joining a training group. It makes the long runs much more enjoyable. 18 miles (if you are a slow runner like me) is a long time to be running, so it helps to have a group to motivate you. If you are concerned with distance and are in it to finish, not PR, look up Galloway training. Good Luck!

@Kovas - You have to finish to get your deposit refunded (which isn't a big deal, but it's motivation nonetheless!). I'm hoping to make it a climbing/camping/marathon wknd :)

@Tough Chik - Thanks for tips! I'll check out Galloway and see if there is local training groups. And I have a new pair of shoes that I HATE, so I'll save those for the Warrior Dash :)
